Lately, I’ve really gotten into listening to podcasts – to me, it’s like reading a book or watching a really great TV show without having to sit in one place and concentrate on only one task. I’m terrible for getting irritable and antsy if I sit down for too long, so podcasts are perfect for when I’m getting ready for bed in the evening, brushing my teeth or taking off my make-up. There are so many different ones out there, for all kinds of different tastes and interests, but I thought it would be nice for me to recommend 5 that I’ve given a listen to and really enjoy. Again, all of these are different and you really might not like them, but they’re a good starting point to see the kind of things that are out there. Happy listening.
- Serial – Link
“Serial unfolds one story – a true story – over the course of a whole season. The show follows the plot and characters wherever they lead, through many surprising twists and turns. Sarah won’t know what happens at the end of the story until she gets there, not long before you get there with her.”
This podcast has turned into a global phenomenon and it really is that good. The story behind it, the murder in 1999 of Hae Min Lee, a 17 year old student from Baltimore, is both fascinating and extremely sad – a girl struck down in her prime and so much uncertainty surrounding how she died. There’s a ton of speculation going on here and it’s difficult to know whether the truth will ever truly be found, but it certainly does make you question how the justice system works and how it affects every single person involved. If I could recommend just one podcast, this would be it.
- The Lively Show – Link
“The Lively show is a weekly podcast designed to add a little extra intention to your everyday. Episodes will touch on various aspects of our lives including possessions, personal habits, relationships, and career. Entrepreneurship and online business also appear from time to time. There is a special emphasis on the blogging world and each episode is designed to uplift, inform, and inspire.”
This is a great podcast for bloggers, women who want a little inspiration and anyone looking for a little business advice too. Jess Lively interviews so many great professionals and they give such great tips and advice on so many different topics, that you never come away feeling anything other than inspired and motivated. It’s thought provoking and you’ll always find a topic that strikes a chord with you, so take a look at all the episodes and pick out the ones that say something to you and your current situation – you won’t be disappointed. One I’ve listened to recently, which I’ve really enjoyed, is with Kendi Skeen, from Kendi Everyday – it comes with great advice on fashion and blogging.
- The Joy the Baker Podcast – Link
“Joy the Baker and Tracy of Shutterbean.com discuss life’s important issues: cake, candy, cameras, boys, and lip gloss.”
This is a super fun podcast from Joy the Baker, who is one of my go-to food bloggers, for her fabulous recipes and her witty nature. This isn’t a food podcast – it’s a lovely random mix of blog talk, girly chat, as well as some foodie expertise. If you want something super light to listen to on your daily commute then this is the one to go for – be prepared to laugh out loud and have everyone around you look a little weirdly as you giggle along.
- Elise Gets Crafty – Link
“When I started listening to podcasts I was looking for a show just like this; something accessible that was geared toward small-business owners and/or creatives. I couldn’t find one, so I started my own. My goal is to introduce you to smart, interesting people who are good at what they do and willing to share their expertise. I hope you find the episodes fun, inspiring and thought-provoking.”
This is a great podcast for creative types who are looking for great small business advice. The interviews are filled with the best kind of people – the kind of people you’d like to have a one-on-one sit down with to really pick their brain on what makes them successful and their business work. I find it particularly inspiring as a blogger, even if I’m not a small business owner, and I come away feeling so inspired and motivated to take all the advice I hear and put it into practice to make my blog as good as it can be. One of my recent favourite listens is episode 8, with the girls from A Beautiful Mess, such a great listen.
- After the Jump – Link
“Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge takes her love art and design from the web to radio. Through a series of interviews with designers, store owners and up-and-coming members of the creative community, Grace will delve deeper into the world of independent artists. From exploring the day-to-day lives of contemporary makers to discussing the challenges they face, After the Jump will take the conversation off the screen and into real life.”
This is another great creative business podcast, which will give a ton of advice on all kinds of issues, from branding and social media to work/life balance and finding your creative voice. And considering the force behind it runs one of the best design sites going, you can’t go far wrong with this one, especially if you’re looking to hear from other individuals, maybe even people you’ve never heard of, who are passionate and excited about their field – there’s no way some of that enthusiasm can’t rub off.
