The Notebook (2004)

Go for this if you’re the old romantic type, who believes in true love, being swept off your feet and growing old together. It is an absolute classic and you can’t help but be swept along in the lifelong love of Allie and Noah, who you just know are destined to be together right from the beginning. With some of the most romantic, heartfelt moments of recent movie history, you should definitely give this one a go if you want something truly inspiring.

Beauty & the Beast (1991)

This one is for the big kid in all of us. My favourite Disney movie by far, full of awe-inspiring music and just a wonderful love story in the middle of a lesson about loving someone for what’s inside, this is full of pure Disney magic. If you really want something heartwarming (and pretty light), this one if for you, and extra points if you sing along to all the catchy tunes.

Valentine’s Day (2010)

This one requires very little in terms of following along plot lines or anything more than just a few intertwined stories of a bunch of super famous actors and actresses, but it’ll get you in the mood for Valentine’s Day like nothing else and is an enjoyable ride. Some stories sad, some funny, some just plain old romantic, there’s something to suit all tastes, and you’ll identify with at least one character on the way, so it’s also fun to watch with friends.

Friends with Benefits (2011)

This would be my choice for romantic comedy on Valentine’s Day, because it’s a fun premise, Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake are great and it seems like a pretty realistic representation of what might happen if you did the friends with benefits thing. This one is lighter than my other choices and would be the perfect choice for someone who’s not necessarily into celebrating the day or just wants to have a bit of fun.

Casablanca (1942)

This one is for the golden oldie film buff, who’s looking to go classic with their choice of movie on Valentine’s night. From over 70 years ago, this has remained one of the most popular romantic films ever made and will be on many people’s lists of ones to watch when you’re feeling in a loving mood. If you’re looking for old school romance, this is the one to go for, especially to give yourself a break from some of the less than stellar offerings from the past few years. This is how to do it right.
